Callista Gingrich will likely be the next U.S. ambassador to the Vatican

Callista Gingrich, the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, is said to be the favored candidate to become U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican.

According to CNN, the White House may announce her nomination ahead of the President's meeting with the Pope on May 24.

In January, Newt Gingrich confirmed to the New York Times that she was under consideration. Others who had reportedly been considered for the ambassadorship included William Simon Jr., a friend of Rudy Giuliani.

If indeed nominated, Gingrich will be far from the first Georgian to land a White House nomination. Former Congressman Tom Price is now serving as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, while former Governor Sonny Perdue is heading up the U.S. Agriculture Department. Larry Thompson, a current UGA law professor who served as deputy attorney general of the United States from 2001 to 2003, has also been identified as a potential replacement for fired FBI Director James Comey.
